Merchant codes are four-digit codes that categorize retailers across all industries; until now, gun purchases had been classified under “miscellaneous retail stores” or “sporting goods stores.”

Over the last few weeks, bills prohibiting the use of Firearm Merchant Codes have been introduced. Alternatively, in Colorado, a bill that REQUIRES the use of a specific merchant code for firearms has been introduced.
