People of Pawn : Jeremy Powell

Jeremy Powell

How did you get started in pawn?

I am a third-generation broker. I took an interest in the firearms side of the business at a really young age. I love WWII guns and early 1900s boys’ rifles.

What is the number one pawn skill you have?

The ability to read and adapt to the customer’s personality in order to make the customer happy and feel welcomed even if we don’t close a deal, they will remember the way we make them feel more than anything

What pawn talent do you wish you had?

I wish I was a better marketer.

What customer behavior aggravates you the most?

Just filth and the customers who believe they have to talk to me every time they pawn or buy.

What customer behavior brings you joy?

Watching the financial growth of our customer from starting with a loan to becoming a purchasing customer.

What is the weirdest thing you have ever written a loan for?

$10,000 winning lotto scratch off. Lottery office was closed for a holiday and the customer wanted to celebrate.

What career would you pick if you were not in pawn?

I would have to be in something that deals with the public. I would think in public service somewhere but not law enforcement because my report writing skills are no good.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Stepped back from the shop to spend more time with the family

Do you want your children to follow in your footsteps?

I want them to pursue their dream job.

What college degree would be great to have to work in pawn?

I don’t feel one is needed. I am the first of three generations that even graduated high school.  What you need is basic accounting knowledge.

What is the one piece of advice to anyone considering the pawn industry?

If you’re not a people person and number person, this may not be the job for you.
